Mr. Steve Baker

Steve Baker holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling.   He brings nearly 30 years of mental health experience to The Change Group.  He is a licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and an Internationally Certified Substance Abuse Counselor.  Steve is co-founder of The Change Group, and serves as its Clinical Director, overseeing the clinical aspects of each therapist’s treatment and providing supervision.

Steve’s extensive training in addictions, anxiety and depression and years of clinical supervisory experience shapes his multi-disciplinary approach to counseling.  His counseling approach focused on recovery from the ill effects of addictions, depressions, anxiety and co-occurring disorders.  This includes but is not limited to working with stress management issues, depression, self-image, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic, anxiety, addictions, and co-occurring disorders.

Steve is an Adjunct Professor of Undergraduate Psychology and a Graduate Counseling Clinical Consultant.  Prior to The Change Group, Steve was a principal clinician at Wyndhurst Counseling in Lynchburg, VA.

Over the years Steve has worked in both outpatient and inpatient facilities.  Steve retired from the United States Air Force in 2000 where he was the superintendent of a mental health clinic. He has been working in the mental health and substance abuse field for the last 27 years. While in the USAF he often taught on a wide range of topics such as adult and adolescent addiction, family dynamics, psychopathology, stress reduction, and critical incident stress management.

Steve has a deep appreciation and respect for the value of each person, believing that we all have gifts and talents that we can develop. Steve believes that one’s faith and belief system plays an important role in the shaping of how we see and respond to the world around us.   This can be an integral part of each individual’s experience.  Although Steve is a Christian, and man of faith, he does not believe in imposing his faith on the people he works with.  He realizes this is a sensitive area for many people.  If requested Steve can help in the development of spiritual disciplines.  As a trained and seasoned professional he is sensitive to each client’s beliefs system, valuing and respecting his or her expectations for the counseling process. Steve is committed to helping people develop a healthy whole life method to living.  A balanced bio, psycho, social, spiritual approach to living is more than just a philosophical approach for Steve.  It is a way of life. ……
